Dear André,

Will you keep your Mercury on the boat? In that case a 55 lbs motor will do fine for trolling purposes, even with some wind and waves. If you use it also as your main propulsion I would suggest you pick a stronger model, i.e. Traxxis 80 lbs. Both MotorGuide and Minn Kota are reliable brands. Personally I prefer MotorGuide, but there are people who will prefer Minn Kota.

Regards,
Anton

Hello,

Im writing you in hope that you can help me.

Im big fan of trollfishing in Sweden-area on big freshwater-lakes.
This time I bought me a Crescent 465 boat with mercury 25hp. Weight all together with 3 persons, and so on max. 700 kg.

Cause the benzinmotor makes so much noise during trolling, Im thinking about using just for trolling an electromotor.

Im looking for an 55 lbs thrust modell (MinnKota Traxxis or Motorguide VariMax 55).

My question is if you can advise me or have some experience with driving with electromotors on big lakes, about that my choosed modell with 55 lbs is strong enough. I choosed just 12V max-possible-modell, cause batteries I have always to transport to the boat after charging.

And are the 55 lbs -modells strong enough to deal on the water also when there is wind and waves?

I wanna reach trolling-speed, maybe 2,3 kn. Is it possible in your opinion?

Would you advice to Motorguide or Minnkota. I read that Motorguide should be stronger, is it true?

For your help I would be very, very thankfull!

regards,
André Guldan
